A sharp escalation of the conflict in Gaza has left the entire population of 2.2 million people in crisis or worse levels of acute food insecurity. One in four households in Gaza, more than half a million people, are facing catastrophic hunger conditions. Hundreds of thousands are crammed into overcrowded shelters and hospitals, with food and water running out.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has provided emergency food and cash assistance to over 856,700 people across Gaza and the West Bank.

However, humanitarian operations are on the brink of collapse. WFP calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, the opening of all border crossings, and the resumption of commercial cargo to provide relief and put an end to the suffering.

The number of places where WFP and partners can safely provide life-saving assistance is shrinking rapidly, putting hundreds of thousands at risk of being cut off from any form of relief.

WFP urgently needs US$314 million until end April 2024 for its operations in Palestine.

What the World Food Programme is doing to respond to the Palestinian emergency

Food assistance
WFP reached over 665,250 displaced people in Gaza with food parcels, wheat flour, fortified biscuits, hot meals and complementary feeding for pregnant and breastfeeding women, in December. Six additional bakeries have been contracted in Rafah to provide up to 100,000 people outside shelters with fresh bread – if fully operational. WFP works with partners to support community-led kitchens that provide hot meals every day. In December, an estimated 79, 265 people have received hot meals in 47 locations across Gaza.
Cash assistance
WFP is not currently providing cash-based transfer assistance in Gaza as shops have run out of essential food supplies. WFP had been providing monthly cash-based transfers to more than 528,000 people in the first month of the emergency.
Logistics
During the humanitarian pause that end 1 December, WFP was able to scale up, expand partnerships, deliver to hard-to-reach areas and expand logistics capacities in Gaza. WFP supports partners through the Logistics Cluster, the Emergency Telecommunications Cluster and the Food Security Cluster. WFP works with local partners on the ground to deliver assistance.
